GPU workload scales directly with pixel count: 4K renders roughly 4x the pixels of 1080p. CPU workload per frame (game logic, physics, draw calls, AI) barely changes with resolution. The practical result: the same CPU+GPU pair can be CPU-limited at 1080p and comfortably GPU-limited at 4K.
A concrete example
Take a AMD Ryzen 5 5600 paired with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 in Counter-Strike 2 — about as extreme a CPU/GPU mismatch as our catalog allows. At 1080p High, our model estimates 267 FPS and calls this scenario cpu limitation: the GPU has far more headroom than the CPU can feed it. At 4K Ultra, the same pair estimates 180 FPS and the picture flips towards the GPU carrying more of the load, because rendering work scales up so much faster than CPU work.

If you play at 1080p on a high-refresh monitor — especially competitive titles — a CPU upgrade often yields a bigger real-world gain than a GPU upgrade.
