For gaming specifically, single-thread and per-core performance (clock speed, IPC, cache) tend to matter more than raw core count. A 6-core/12-thread modern CPU is plenty for the vast majority of games — going to 12 or 16 cores helps multitasking and productivity far more than it helps frame rate.
3D V-Cache is a real, measurable gaming advantage
AMD's X3D chips (like the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 7800X3D and 9800X3D) stack extra L3 cache directly onto the CPU die. Games are unusually cache-sensitive, so these parts post a meaningfully higher estimated gaming index than their non-X3D counterparts in our catalog despite similar or lower clock speeds.
Match the CPU to your GPU and resolution

Platform longevity
A current socket (AM5 on the AMD side, LGA1851 on the Intel side at time of writing) gives you a longer runway to upgrade the CPU later without replacing the motherboard — worth weighing against a cheaper, older-platform CPU if you plan to upgrade in a year or two.
